You may be interested in the health benefits of CBD or hemp oil but may not understand how they differ from each other or marijuana. Learn their key distinctions to decide which products are right for you.
What is Hemp Oil?
Hemp oil is derived from the hemp seed through cold press technology. While it comes from the same plant (Cannabis sativa) as CBD oil, hemp oil offers different medicinal properties.
Hemp seed oil is a nutritional supplement containing all essential amino acids, and its fatty acid content may be good for the brain and skin health. It also contains protein and fiber but doesn’t contain THC, CBD, terpenes, or other hemp compounds. This supplement can be added to food and drinks or used as a topical moisturizer.
What You Need to Know About CBD Oil
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one hundred of phytochemicals found in the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant. CBD oil is extracted from the plant and offers therapeutic effects like reducing anxiety, pain, and seizures. It doesn’t produce a euphoric state like marijuana because regulations limit THC levels in CBD oil to 0.3% or less.
CBD oil can be legally used in all US states and is available in topicals, soft gels, pain patches, and gummies. There are three main types of CBD:
- Full-Spectrum: this CBD oil contains flavonoids, terpenes, and other beneficial chemical compounds from the hemp plant. It does contain THC and can show up on drug tests.
- CBD Isolate: available as a crystalline powder instead of oil, this isolate does not contain THC or other cannabis compounds. It is the purest form of CBD.
Broad-Spectrum: this oil is THC-free but still contains other cannabinoid compounds like terpenes and flavonoids.
How Marijuana Differs
Marijuana doesn’t come from the hemp plant like hemp oil and CBD oil. The marijuana plant contains different compounds, with lower levels of CBD and higher levels of THC, the psychoactive component.
Marijuana can be used medicinally to ease pain, nausea, and anxiety, but it also causes the user to get high. Unlike CBD and hemp oil, marijuana is not legal throughout the US.
